Healthy Living is Mom's Business Priority

Moms can be categorized under three employment types (or a combination of): homemaker, self-employed or employee. Regardless of how these types are balanced, the essential business priority for mom is maintaining her health.

Is it easy to skip the workout and grab whatever from the fridge or drive-thru? Yes. Is it healthy? No. At day's end, you’re exhausted with more work, family care, and chores waiting, yet your energy is zapped and you're worrying about tackling the next day.

When health is sacrificed, depression, sickness, frustration, and anger simmer and settle over the whole house. Excuses are easy and made frequently. Facing reality is hard. Taking charge of time management isn't easy but necessary. Approach healthy living as a business priority to prosper and overcome exhaustion.

What to do? Where to start?

1. You’re unique. Consider personality, body type, genetics, medical conditions, and time management skills.
2. Evaluate lifestyle. What is causing more stress and less beneficial results for a healthy, happy life?
3. Read the fine print of diets and/or exercise plans. Know your limitations. Right now may not be the time to train for a marathon or a 10K, but a 5k is manageable.
4. Read beyond testimonials and keep #1 in mind!
5. Fully research plans by reading reviews, forums, and expert medical/professional opinions.
6. Set aside time daily to pursue a healthy activity (mediation, healthy food preparation, exercise, etc.)

Your health is your responsibility. Unlike the tax man dealing out a hefty fine if you mess up on taxes, no one is knocking on your door because you pigged out or avoided exercising. However, stress, the watchful eyes of your children, and lack of 100% productivity will creep into the home, fester, and slowly eat away at the many advantages for sustaining the family's livelihood.

How to live up to your responsibility?

1. Prioritize exercise even when you don’t want to or don’t like it.
2. Focus on Needs over Wants
3. Schedules exercise commitments as part of the workday (it is essential to the job)
4. Set up guidelines for the kitchen and pantry
5. Schedule medical and dental checkups

Your health and fitness is the cornerstone to being successful on the job—give it the priority it deserves. You will be exhausted by the day’s end, have family to care for and more work to do, but your body will be healthy and fit to face everyday at 100% capacity.

I hear you on #3 for What to do? Where to start? I was planning a half-marathon, but then found that the goal was more stressful for me than it was helpful. I've scaled back to a goal of running 2-3 times a week and now running is back to being fun. For me, that's essential! I think sometimes I get so focused on a goal that I forget about enjoying the steps to get there. For me, stressful running was the wake-up call. A realistic goal is much more important than an impressive one - afterall, we want to reach our goals so we can set new ones, right?!!

Exercise is the only reason I keep it together so well. When I don't exercise I'm irritable, tired, and have less patience for my son. I also crave the foods that are good for me compared to days when I don't get out I'm craving things that are not good for me. I really see it as a way to be a better wife and mother.
