We had a great #Fiberplus Twitter party last night (November 18th) with lots of great information shared. Let's build on that and kick off our official Mamavation Fiber Challenge!
For the next 6 weeks (which takes us to New Year's Eve), we are going to focus on our fiber intake. What great timing, since this time of year includes so many parties, family get-togethers, etc, and they all center around food.
Most of what you read about dietary fiber intake recommends 25 grams for women ages 19-50. However, Cynthia, our Mamavation nutritionist, recommends 35-40 grams daily. With all of the research that I've done, I agree with Cynthia. There are SO many health benefits from eating a fiber-rich diet! Weight loss, cancer prevention, diabetes and heart disease prevention, just to name a few.
So, for the sake of our challenge, we'll say that our MINIMUM goal is 25 grams daily. With the ultimate goal being 35-40 grams.
FIRST STEP of the challenge: If you are not already, begin tracking your daily fiber intake. If you are already using an online tool to track your calories, such as SparkPeople or MyFitnessPal, you can add fiber as a nutrient to be tracked.
Or you can use old-fashioned pen and paper, read the labels of the food you are eating, and record the amount of fiber on paper. Whatever works for you!
If you haven't been tracking your dietary fiber intake, keep track for the next 3 days to find out how much you are getting.
Once you know that number, or if you already know, tell me in the comments below what your average fiber intake is. Yes, confession time. If you're not eating enough fiber, the next step of the challenge will be to help you increase your fiber intake.
You DO NOT want to increase your fiber intake too fast! Too much fiber too soon can cause bloating, excess gas and even diarrhea. We will work on increasing fiber slowly. We'll brainstorm ideas, not only for ourselves, but for our families as well. Leah shared last night that if children eat a fiber-rich diet, they are LESS LIKELY to become overweight as adults. (Plus, who wants constipated kids?)
So, if you already know your fiber intake, tell me! If not, start tracking your dietary fiber, then come back and report. I average between 30 and 45 grams of fiber daily. Yes, I go over the recommended amount, but my body is used to it.
Your turn....
